Reverend William Brennan

We have received word of the death of Father William Brennan, who passed on from this life on Sunday, February 5, at the age of 84.

Visitation will be held February 7 - 8 at Hackett-Metcalf Funeral Home, 2640 Monroe Blvd., Dearborn, (313-274-4000), from 1- 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. He will lie in repose on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Albert the Great Parish, Dearborn Heights.

Condolences may be sent to his niece, Kelly Trout, 22754 Fawn, Brownstown Twp., 48183.

Ordained a priest on June 6, 1953, Father Brennan's assignments included: associate pastor of St. Lawrence Parish, Utica; St. Boniface Parish, Detroit; St. Christine Parish, Detroit; St. Luke Parish, Detroit. He was pastor of St. Margaret Mary Parish, Detroit; and St. Sebastian Parish, Dearborn Heights.

Father Brennan was removed from active ministry according to the norms of the Dallas Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

Archbishop Vigneron's father, Elwin Vigneron, passed on from this life at the age of 92.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadine; his daughter, Patricia; his sons, Allen, John (Cindy), Ron (Diane), Mark (Anne Marie) and Gary (Kimberly); 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Norman.

Visitation will be at Gendernalik Funeral Home (586-725-0177), 35259 Twenty Three Mile Road, New Baltimore. Visitation will be from 6 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service; and from 2 until 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, with a 7 p.m. Rosary. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Parish or Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

On Friday, June 8, he will lie in repose at Immaculate Conception Church from 10:30 until his 11:30 a.m. funeral Mass. Immaculate Conception is located at 9792 Dixie Highway in Ira Township.

Father Richard was born on May 19, 1929 in Detroit and was ordained on June 15, 1961 at Colombiere College, Clarkston, Michigan.

Visitation will take place at Colombiere Center, 9075 Big Lake Road, Clarkston on Friday, September 14 from 4 – 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Father Clifford F. Ruskowski Death Notice

Father Ruskowski was born on August 4, 1936, in Detroit, and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 2, 1962. His many assignments include serving as an associate pastor or weekend associate at Ascension Parish, Warren; St. Kevin Parish, Inkster; National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish, Royal Oak; St. Ives Parish, Southfield; and St. Paul of Tarsus Parish, Clinton Township. He was on the faculty of St. Mary’s College, Orchard Lake; SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake; St. John Provincial Seminary, Plymouth; and Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit. He was pastor of Our Lady of the Woods Parish, Woodhaven, from 1991-1996; and St. Owen Parish, Bloomfield Hills, from 1999 to 2007, when he retired from full-time ministry.

He will be waked at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road, Warren, (586-751-0444), where visitation will be held on Monday, September 17 from 3-9 p.m., and Tuesday, September 18 from 2-9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7.

Kosicki’s many assignments included serving as associate pastor at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish, Detroit; Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Grosse Pointe Woods; St. Anne Parish, Warren; St. Christopher Parish, Detroit; Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish, Hamtramck; St. Albertus Parish, Detroit; and St. Hyacinth Parish, Detroit.  In addition, Fr. Kosicki served as pastor at Sweetest Heart of Mary Parish, Detroit; St. Ladislaus Parish, Hamtramck; St. Lucy Parish, St. Clair Shores and as director of the Archdiocesan Office of Special Service.

Monsignor Eugene Edyk

Our brother and fellow priest, Monsignor Eugene Edyk, passed on from this life on September 22, 2012 at the age of 75.
 
Monsignor Edyk was born on May 26, 1937 and was ordained a priest on June 25, 1961 in Lodz, Poland.  He incardinated into the Archdiocese of Detroit on August 20, 1997.
 
Monsignor Edyk’s assignments included serving as associate pastor at St. Paul of Tarsus Parish, Clinton Township; St. Rene Goupil Parish, Sterling Heights; and pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Yale.  Monsignor Edyk also served as professor for 22 years at SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary and St. Mary’s College, Orchard Lake.
 
Visitation will take place at St. Joseph Parish Church, 830 S. Lafayette, South Lyon, on Wednesday, September 26 from 4-9 p.m., with scripture service at 7 p.m.
 
Monsignor Edyk will lie in repose on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the celebration of his funeral Mass at 11 a.m.  Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Our brother and fellow priest, Father J. Walter Stanievich, passed on from this life on October 5, 2012, at the age of 92.

Father Stanievich was born on February 3, 1920, in Hamtramck, Michigan and ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit on October 26, 1946.

Fr. Stanievich’s many assignments included serving as associate pastor at St. Clement Parish, Warren; St. Patrick Parish, Wyandotte; Holy Innocents Parish, Roseville; and St. Vincent Parish, Detroit.  In addition, Fr. Stanievich served as administrator at St. Anthony (Lithuanian) Parish, Detroit; St. Peter Lithuanian Parish, Detroit; St. Paschal Baylon Parish, Taylor; St. Sylvester Parish, Warren; St. Perpetua Parish, Waterford; St. Henry Parish, Lincoln Park; St. Francis Xavier Parish, Ecorse; and as pastor at St. Anthony (Lithuanian) Parish, Detroit and St. Mark Parish, Warren.

Visitation will take place at E. J. Mandziuk & Son Funeral Directors (586-757-3563), 22642 Ryan Road, Warren on Sunday, October 7, from  3-9 p.m. and Monday from 1-9 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Father Stanievich will lie in repose on Tuesday, October 9, at St. Mark Parish Church, 4401 Bart Avenue, Warren from 10:30 a.m. until the celebration of his funeral Mass at 11 a.m.  Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Bishop Patrick R. Cooney

The Gaylord Diocese has notified us of the death of our brother and fellow priest, Most Reverend Patrick R. Cooney.  He entered eternal life on October 15, 2012 at the age of 78.

Bishop Cooney was born in Detroit on March 10, 1934. He was educated at Saint Edward Elementary School and then attended Sacred Heart Seminary High School, graduating in 1952. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary College and was awarded his baccalaureate (B.A.) in 1956 with a major in philosophy. He next attended the Gregorian University in Rome and received an S.T.B. Degree (baccalaureate in sacred theology) in 1958 and an S.T.L. Degree (licentiate in theology) in 1960.

Bishop Cooney was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1959, by Bishop Martin J. O'Connor, then rector of the North American College in Rome.

Following his ordination and completion of theological studies in Rome, Bishop Cooney returned to Detroit and was the Assistant Pastor at Saint Catherine Parish from 1960 until 1962, when he was appointed Assistant Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He remained Assistant Chancellor until 1969, when he was appointed director of the Department of Worship. He continued as director until shortly after his ordination as a bishop. From 1977 to 1983 he was concurrently the rector of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

In December, 1982, His Holiness Pope John Paul II named him to the episcopacy and he was ordained Titular Bishop of Hodelm and Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit on January 27, 1983, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

While serving as assistant chancellor and director of worship, he was also chaplain at Mercy College, Detroit, from 1967 to 1972. While Director of Worship, he pursued graduate work at the University of Notre Dame and received a Master of Arts Degree in liturgical research in May 1973.

Bishop Cooney served as liaison to the Catholic Chaplains of Region VI (Michigan and Ohio) from 1987 to 1991. He was Chairman of the “Church in the City” Task Force in the Archdiocese of Detroit when it was established in December 1983. As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Cooney served on a number of committees: Bishops' Committee on Liturgy, Subcommittee on the Use of Exclusive Language in Liturgy, Subcommittee of Bishops and Scholars, Chair of the Subcommittee on the Book of Blessings, Chair of the Subcommittee on Cremation and Other Funeral Questions, Committee on Laity, National Advisory Council, Co-Chair of the Roman Catholic Reformed Church Dialog Committee and member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Relief Services. He served terms on the Board of Directors of Notre Dame Liturgical Center, the Board of Governors of North American College and on the Board of Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit.

Bishop Cooney was predeceased by his parents Michael and Elizabeth.  He is survived by siblings Reverend Michael Cooney, Sister Leontia Cooney, O.P., and Mary Cooney.  Condolences may be sent to Reverend Michael Cooney, St. Peter Parish, 110 New Street, Mount Clemens, MI 48043.

Bishop Cooney will lie in repose on Thursday, October 18, from 3:30 - 9 p.m. at St. Peter Parish Church, 110 New Street, Mt. Clemens with a vigil service at 7 p.m.  Visitation will continue on Friday from 9 a.m. until the celebration of Mass at 11 a.m. 

Transfer of the body will take place on Sunday, October 21 to St. Mary’s Cathedral, 606 North Ohio Avenue, Gaylord.  Bishop Cooney will lie in repose from 2:30 – 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 4 p.m., Vigil at 6 p.m. and night prayer at 9 p.m.

Bishop Cooney will lie in repose on Monday, October 22 at St. Mary’s Cathedral from 9 a.m. until the celebration of his funeral Mass at noon. 

Burial will take place Tuesday, October 23 at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Father John O'Neill, S.J.

Father John O’Neill, S.J. entered eternal life on October 28, 2012 at the age of 83.

A Jesuit for 65 years, Father O'Neill served most of his career at University of Detroit-Mercy.

Visitation will take place at the Colombiere Center, 9075 Big Lake Road, Clarkston on Friday, November 2, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. with Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Father John will lie in repose on Saturday, November 3 at the Colombiere Center from 10 a.m. until the celebration of his funeral Mass at 10:45 a.m.   Burial will take place at the Colombiere Center Cemetery, Clarkston.
